INTERNATIONAL ACTION LEARNING MBA®
Business School Netherlands – University of
Applied Sciences
A comprehensive management development project
GENERAL INFORMATION
An excitingly different learning experience
Business School Netherlands (BSN) is a global
provider of excitingly different learning
experiences that enable managers to learn faster
than the prevailing rate of change thus creating
better leaders beyond academics.
BSN started its first MBA programme in 1988 and
from the outset the programme embraced the
philosophy of Action Learning, a method
appreciated by busy managers and praised for its
practical, results-orientated approach. The
success of Action Learning has been
overwhelming. Over the years more than 30 000
managers have joined Action Learning programmes
in 30 countries around the world.
Where is the programme accredited?
BSN is accredited by the
Dutch Validation Council (DVC) and the
Nederlands Vlaamse Accreditatie Organisatie (NVAO).
The NVAO is the official Dutch governmental
accreditation body. This accreditation
guarantees recognition of the degree in most
European countries, which leads in fact to a
global recognition.
Why choose this MBA of BSN –the Action Learning
Business School?
BSN realised that future MBA delivery models
were to be tailored to create time efficient
solutions for managers, who just could not
afford to be away too often and too long from
their workplaces, but who needed to learn and
interact with their peers originating from
different destinations in the world bringing an
international perspective to real time
challenges and problems experienced in the
workplace– the result was the streamlined
International Action Learning MBA for managers
globally.
In essence the International Action Learning MBAÒ
(IALMBA) is a comprehensive management
development project within existing
business/organization. It consists of a series
of Action Learning Projects and a Masters
Project that form the backbone of studies based
on own professional workplace learning and are
assessed by a team of specialist BSN faculty.
The International Action Learning MBA consists of three phases
In Phase 1
you will be provided with basic theoretical
knowledge regarding Phase 2. A common conceptual
framework will be created and you will get a
better understanding of relevant leadership
skills and competencies. This will result in you
completing the all important Organizational
Analysis (OA) and gaining new insight in how and
how well the different business disciplines
interface in your particular business.Phase 2
consists of six core courses divided in 2
blocks. This phase comprises six Action Learning
Projects (ALP) covering Human Resources,
Marketing and Operations Management (Block 1)
and Financial, Information and Strategic
Management (Block 2).
Phase 3
of the programme is finalised on successful
completion of your Masters Project. Whereas an
Action Learning project addresses a relevant
problem or challenge in your own organization,
the Masters Project has to address a topic of
strategic value to the organization. Support is
given by the internal examiner during this final
phase.
PROGRAMME
Phase 1: Start-up
The programme commences with a 12 week period (3
months) in which managers will be guided towards
completing an Organizational Analysis (OA) on
their own organization, or in certain cases to
analyse the division/department in the context
of their organization.
Phase 2: Six Core Courses and two separate workshop-weeks in Holland
The 2nd phase consists of two workshop weeks of
three Core Courses each. Such a week is designed
and organised to be an inspirational and
exciting period of ‘experience, learn and do’
with relevant topics. These are facilitated by
BSN faculty, who are senior specialist with a
sound academic background and extensive
experience in the field, and taken into open
discussion related to the organizations
represented by the particular set.

The workshop weeks have the same structure and
each week consists of:
1. Preparation - 18 weeks (4,5 months):
Individual preparation of three Core Courses
with local and/or internet support from a
Learning Coach.
2. One week Workshop at BSN in The Netherlands:
Three half-day workshops per Core Course are conducted in
English: Vision, Instruments and Integration.
3. Action Learning Projects and Learning
Logbooks–18 weeks (4,5 months):
Six Action Learning Projects (one per Core Course) are
completed intending to improve on a subject
relevant aspect in his/her own place of work. A
logbook of learning is held to reflect valuable
learning points and new knowledge gained. These
documents are equally valuable for the business
school and the managers’ organization because it
reflects the both competence to act within a
business discipline in the place of work and
awareness towards learning from actions taken –
both invaluable skills!
Phase 3: Dissertation (Duration: 3 – 6 months)
Whereas an Action Learning project addresses a
relevant problem or challenge in the own
organisation, the dissertation has to address a
topic of strategic value for the organisation.
Support will be given by the Internal Examiner.
Assessment
Managers need to show their competence in
solving real life problems, by applying the
relevant theories and using the experiences and
best practices of others. A strict scheme of
assessment criteria is used to evaluate the
Action Learning Projects and Dissertation.
Who can apply?
Managers must have finalised at least a
Bachelor’s study and hold a management or
management trainee position. Exceptions can be
made. In such cases an APEL (Accreditation of
Prior Experiential Learning) interview will be
required. Completion of the English literacy
test is also a requirement. The organization of
the manager has to be fully supportive, to
enable him/her to execute the change projects. Investment
Investment
Investment in learning is crucial for the modern
day manager. The programme
